It's Better Over Here is a story about a 17-year old girl named Shannon (played by Kay Bowman) who has moved to a new town with her mother. The high school she attends is made up of mostly rich kids and Shannon really wants to be accepted. She even sacrifices her relationship with her friend, Katie. Shannon is accepted by the popular rich kids, becomes friends with a cheerleader named Amanda and starts dating the quarterback of the football team, Steve. But after obtaining her status of popularity, Shannon realizes it is not how she thought it would be. It's Better Over Here aired on Roseville Channel 18.
For this shoot our cast had eight actors and 15 extras. I wanted to tape at an actual school but was told I needed to have $1 million in liability insurance and had to pay a custodial staff member for letting my cast and crew on campus on a Saturday. Also, there was a scene I wanted to take place in the public library so I contacted the librarian who told me to call the Media Department at the City of Roseville. The woman I spoke with said she would call me back but she never did.
As a result, I contacted a Youth Pastor who said we could tape the show at his church. The church was big with hallways, classrooms, and a gym just like a school. In addition, some individuals in the high school youth group were excited to work as extras. Two of them were cast in roles. The church also had a cafe, so I had the cafe take the place of the library, which made for a more lively scene.
